21 and Counting at Lost River Permaculture

We have 21 calves so far and I am sure there will be a few more later today. Feeding time is the best time to take photos of our beautiful little cows. Their mothers are distracted by food and thus the babies are left to their own devices. This gives us the chance to get right up close to them without a worried mom poking her nose into our business. I made it about halfway through the calves before they caught on to what I was doing. After that there was no keeping them still, the minute they saw me coming they were off and running. They are so full of energy especially now that we have had some nice weather. The sun has been out and all the cattle are finally dry! Soon enough we will be tagging these little guys!

Strange Weather at Lost River Permaculture

We went from sunshine with beautiful sunsets to snow, then rain then snow and rain at the same time. . The most excitement we have seen at the farm was the other day when the vet came out to check on one of our expecting mothers.

We now have 7 calves all happy, healthy and full of piss and vinegar.

It Snowed..at Lost River Permaculture

It snowed yesterday, in the middle of April. That is Saskatchewan for you folks. We can go from +17°c and melting to -10°c with an inch of snow. All in the course of 48 hours.

Lucky for us snow does not deter our mother cows from giving birth! We arrived this morning to yet another newborn trailing after its mother. We moved them out of the crowded mothers pen and into the newborns pen. In the newborns pen April/Alfred was doing very well, starting to run, jump and probably drive its mother crazy. I'm sure we will have a few more new additions to the heard within the next few days! As for the one born today we shall call him/her Belle/Bucko. We will also figure out the sexes of the newborns this week so we can finalize on the names :)

First Calf of the Season! At Lost River Permaculture

This morning we came upon a very exciting sight. A mother cow with the first calf of the season! Mother and baby did all the work themselves and are both happy and healthy! Snapping a picture was rather tricky this morning as we did not want to intrude on the pair. We decided to take an evening drive out to check on them. We also checked out the summer road between our place and the farm. We were unable to make it the entire way on the summer path but we gave it our best shot, and got a couple great shots out of the trip ;) When we got to the farm we found mother and baby doing well in their new secluded pen. They will have perhaps only a day of privacy depending on when the next calf appears. Mother cow gave us a few moments to snap some quick shots of her beautiful little one! How I envy the newborns lusciously long lashes! Sigh. 

Here at Lost River Permaculture we name our new borns in alphabetical order.  Since it is April and this little calf is the first we will call her April. If she turns out to be a he, then we shall call him Alfred. 

Now to come up with a good "B" name!
