Feedlot Maintenance 101 - Lost River Permaculture

Spring is on its ways but that's not going to stop the little calves from entering into the world! Yes, calving season is just on the horizon now that we are heading into April. With spring time, comes spring maintenance. From fence fixin to gate installation it all must be prepared.

Now people, there ain't nothing quite like the feeling you get when the cattle feedlot needs some TLC! Serious business calls for serious planning. One must evaluate the situation and, for lack of better words, think like a large quadrupedal herbivore. Will the enclosure keep cows in? Will it keep them separated when needed? Will each section have water access? Strategic problem solving is how I like to think of it. Always be one step ahead of your herd!

Today we tackled much of the maintenance. First of all we patched the breach points.

Secondly we reinforced the weak points.

Finally, it is essential to supply each feedlot section with proper drinking water for the cattle. Sometimes the water is shared between two sections. It is important that certain cows are kept in their designated areas for a smooth running operation.

Although simple in theory this maintenance will go a far way to aid us once the action commences, organization is of the utmost importance!
